Hold Your Head

24 April 2012

Shark homie Homeboy Sandman with the new video from his “Chimera” EP, out now on Stones Throw. I’m posting this here because it’s dope and because this song has been a big help to me (baje) over the last week while dealing with some rough shit. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the drama of our own lives that we forget that the things we say and the things we create have real power and can have sincere, usable value to other people in our immediate communities and around the globe.

But in order for that to be true, we have to first be capable of speaking and creating from a mindset that places real value on giving a fuck. The world seems to have an endless appetite for rewarding the greedy and the powerful, but WE don’t have to play that game if WE don’t believe in it. The world as a whole will not reward US in the same way that it rewards the greedy and the powerful, but WE can certainly reward each other by supporting one another.

Bi-Polar Bear Kickstarter: Get In On The Ground Floor

19 April 2012

Modern Shark and Bi-Polar Bear need your help to make the release of “When Ledge Is Home” the smash success that is deserves to be. At this point you may be asking yourself: “Why is a record label asking me for money to fund one of its projects? Isn’t there a room in the Modern Shark mansion where they keep a giant pile of cash? Why can’t they just take some money from The Money Room like they usually do when it’s time to put out a record?”

The answer to your question is twofold. The first part is this: There is no Money Room. We don’t even know how that rumor got started. But for real, Modern Shark is NOT a traditional label. Yes we create, promote, and sell (exceptionally good) music. But we do so collectively, using all sorts of different models. Every “deal” is different, and specifically tailored based on what makes most sense for the collective good of the artists and the label. The second part of the answer is this: Because times have changed. But only slightly…

By asking you to buy a copy of the album, we were in effect going to ask you to invest in this project anyway. The only difference is: Now we’re asking you to show your support up front, which a whole bunch of you have already done! So check out the video, listen to 2 tracks from the album, and if you like what you hear / see, you can secure an advance digital copy (before anyone else gets it!) for only $10. If you donate a little more, you get a signed poster too. A little more, you also get a tee shirt . See how this works? Get in on the ground floor, because this album is a special piece of work, and with a small donation, you can proudly say that you helped to bring it out into the world.
