Quelle Chris & Cavalier “Old Friend”

I like this. I will be the first to admit that I’m not sure what is “happening” in the narrative here. There is birth, death, baptism, renewal, and a teddy bear. It seems like someone’s dream. Maybe Mu Gadu’s dream (the director). Not sure. I’ll have to ask him. But I like this, and after watching, it occurred to me that it’s totally ok that I’m not sure what is “happening” in the story. Rap videos are by and large very straightforward in terms of imagery. This tendency makes a lot of sense when you consider the fact that so much of rap is also so straightforward in terms of lyrical content. But what do you do when it’s time to make a video for a song like “Old Friend”, a song that explores one of humanity’s most enigmatic, amorphous concepts: Déjà vu? A song with haunting (and familiar, of course) lyrics like “Your face was there” and “We both died at 17 that time”? I guess you go to Uganda and shoot something that looks like this.
