You’re Alright, Kid

26 July 2011

“You’re Alright, Kid” is a documentary short about me (Michaelangelo Tumbarello aka Baje One) that was directed, shot, and edited by Reuben Atlas. It captures me around the time when I started Modern Shark and when me and Snaf released “A Miraculous Kind Of Machine”.

I have to be honest that even though I rap about myself all the time, and I put myself out there all the time, I still feel a little funny about being the subject of a documentary. When you rap, you kinda create your own narrative for who you are, you’re in control. I guess it can be hard to let go and allow yourself to see yourself the way that someone else sees you. (That sentence sounds mad confusing, but it makes sense).

Reuben Atlas is currently making a feature-length documentary film about The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. I’ve seen some of the footage and I know that it’s going to be amazing. Check out the film’s website for more info and a beautiful teaser. And stay updated by liking the film on facebook.

Keep up the fight B-1. I dig your phrasing and, you’ve got a good sense of time/groove. a lot of rappers have good ideas but can’t flow like an musical instrument. I’ll have to check out your words later… (on this site I assume) Nice food for thought re: the black music from a white kid POV… Ever come to Toronto for a show ? Keep me posted. later, ‘T’ p.s. Koo… ink !

    ‘Sup Baje!

It’s actually pretty neat to get to know one of your favorite artists a tiny little bit better, so this documentary was a good watch for quite a big Junk Science (or should I say Modern Shark) – fan like me. Been following Junk Science almost since the beginning, and you guys have had a major influence in my (hip-hop) music taste. Junk Science (along with Cool Calm Pete) pretty much showed me was was underneath the more well established ‘underground’ hip-hop, and I’m glad you did.

Keep up the good work, good luck with all your endeavours! Hope Modern Shark will continue to put out quality music for a long while!

    peace, Chris (The Netherlands)
